Grant Grove Village Gift Shop and Restaurant Building - Grant Grove Village, Grant Grove Village - More photos
Grant Grove Village Gift Shop and Restaurant Building. The front gift shop was built in1933. The rear restaurant addition (on the right side of this photo behind the tree trunk) was built in 1962. When the addition was installed in 1962 the front older section was extensively modernized to make it match the new addition. The front of the building still has the old steep roof, although a less-sloped porch has been added. If you look at the end of the building in the center of the photo you can see the gables and bracketed outriggers that still remain from the old steeper roof. A second, new less steep roof was added on the back to create a covered rear porch and match the slope of the roof on the new restaurant addition. New siding and sheet glass windows replaced the old siding and windows on the older building. In 1962 the old building was simply considered out-of-date, rather than historic. The goal of the "Mission 66" plan being implemented at that time in the National Parks was to build new buildings in the parks that looked fresh and modern, eliminating the older rustic style buildings and architecture where feasible. Simpler exteriors with low, gently sloped roofs were the new preferred style. The Visitor Center across the parking lot from this building dates from the same period in the 1960's and has the same architectural style.
