Virtual Tour of The Ahwahnee Hotel - Floorplan
Here is a floor plan provided by the hotel. I modified it a bit for clarity and to reflect recent changes. Wait a minute! Before you go on, let me point out something in the floor plan above that you probably missed. Take another look at it. Specifically, look at it upside down. See a church with a cross on the roof? Just a coincidence? I doubt it, that's the sort of subtle thing master architect's put in their designs! It fits well with the architect's concept of a building that lends to the reverence and awe inspired by Yosemite Valley. While from inside the hotel you might not consciously recognize the cross in the floor plan, you may well subconsciously react to it. If nothing else, if you lived during the 20's, when the general population of the United States was more "churched", you would be familiar with the cross layout. It was used in everything from small country churches to cathedrals. This would add to your experience, even if you didn't consciously realize it. This subtle use of visual clues to cue an emotional response is great architecture, and is one of the reasons this hotel is considered an architectural masterpiece!
