Virtual Tour of The Saint James Hotel - Saint James Hotel, bridge keeper's house

In 1885 a swing bridge was constructed across the Alabama River just south of the St. James Hotel. The bridge rotated 90 degrees in order to create an opening for the river boats to pass through. This small restored house next to the hotel was where the bridge operator lived.
